In an age of “selfies”, Twitter, Instagram influencers, YouTube wannabes, American Idol, celebrity worshippers and the “It’s all About Me” culture, Christians desperately need a long-overdue wake-up call.. This self-absorbed, self-aggrandizing, self-indulgent mentality not only saturates the world but the church as well. This same spirit is at the root of much of our current pop-theology, self-empowerment teaching, hype-ology, self-gratifying fads, “user-friendly” gospels, prosperity messages, culturally correct churches, hip hop pastors, Hollywood Christians and celebrity followings in the church. It also is a major undercurrent in much of contemporary worship and Christian entertainers.
First and foremost, it is not all about you. It never has been about you and it never will be about you. Contemporary Churchianity often makes it all about you but authentic Christianity has never made it all about you. It’s not about your church, your ministry, your leaders, your programs, your worship, your experiences, your good works, your church fads, your “best life now” or anything else either. If the emphasis of your experience, your church, the messages you are listening to, the books you are reading, the programs you are participating in and the experiences you are experiencing are about you then there is something fundamentally wrong and grossly distorted about your Christian experience.
One of the fundamental drives of the fallen nature of man is his emphasis upon himself. He is fundamentally selfish. self-centered, self-absorbed and self-gratifying. Christianity is the antithesis of this. Instead of it being all about “me” it becomes all about “Him”. As Jesus said, “He that seeks to save his life will lose it and he that loses his life for My sake shall find it.” If you don't get this then you flunked "Christianity 101."
The real question we should be asking is not “What is it all about?” but “Who’s it all about?” It’s all about Him. It’s not about becoming a better you but about drawing nearer to Him, knowing Him and learning to be conformed to His image. It’s not about knowing yourself but about knowing Him. It’s not about being self-empowered but finding our sufficiency in Him. It’s not about pleasing yourself but pleasing Him. It’s not about your will being done but His will. It’s not about finding your life but losing it for His sake. It’s not about finding personal happiness but learning to be content in Him. It’s not about being purpose-driven but about picking up your cross and following Him. It’s not even about going to church. it’s about going to Jesus, looking unto Jesus and letting Jesus be the center of your life. It’s not “your time” but His because history is really all about “His-story”.
We are told that God is working in us to do His good pleasure. He is not working in us to do our good pleasure. It’s not about you, your looks, your popularity, your style, your status, your wants, your success, your ambitions, your dreams, your achievements, your vanity or your pleasure. Look around you and wake up! Take a close look at what the underlying focus and priorities of your life are, what the focus of your church life is and what the focus of your relationships are. Is it more about you or about Him? Is your church experience more about your church or is your church more about Him because for the rest of eternity it will not be about you but about Him? The ultimate thing about you that matters is the quality of your relationship with Him. In the end we will all be casting our crowns at His feet!
