"Bye, Bye Miss American Pie"

Updated: Apr 30, 2021

The iconic song “American Pie” not only laments the loss of America’s innocence but, in a spiritual sense, it mourns the death of her very soul. Despite all of the patriotic flag-waving, slogans of making America great again, and the fervency of the cult of “Christian Nationalism”, America has lost her way. The “American Dream” has morphed into a spiritual nightmare. Her moral fabric has been torn to pieces. Her spiritual compass is pointing in the wrong direction. Not only has she turned her back on God but most of what passes for Christianity has lost its relevance and its salt.

Yes, judgement has come to America. Though the signs of this are unfolding before our eyes the vast majority of those who identify as Christians just can't see it. They are failing to discern this judgement because it is so subtle and insidious in nature. Most just can’t bring themselves to admit it because to do so, in their way of thinking, would be Unamerican, unpatriotic and unchristian.

Paul paints a grim picture in Romans of the downward spiral of humanity as it progressively turned away from God. He uses this chilling phrase “HE GAVE THEM UP” three times to underscore the nature and severity of His judgement. I can think of no other biblical phrase which so accurately depicts the nature of the present judgement. These words provide a sobering commentary on what is befalling America; “God also GAVE THEM UP to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts” ...And because they “professed themselves to be wise they became fools”…”and even as they did not desire to keep God in their knowledge God GAVE THEM UP”. This is a fitting commentary on America. Though the nature of this judgement seems almost benign in nature we should not underestimate the seriousness of the consequences. The decline is gaining momentum.

As with so many other times in history, the forbearance of God bore with the wickedness and sins of humanity well into overtime before it was too late to turn back and judgement finally fell. He did so out of love, mercy and longsuffering. He delayed His judgement to give men additional time to repent. He did it in Noah’s day, with Sodom & Gomorrah, Jonah and Nineveh and with Israel. He has done it with America as well. But there comes a time when God's patience finally runs out and He withdraws His divine favor, blessings, protection and sovereign restraints and let's a nation or people go the way of their own choosing down the path of self-destruction and disfavor.

I believe we are witnessing God’s hand in the unfolding process of giving America and the lukewarm church of Laodicea over to their own complacency, comfort, compromise, consumption, convenience and conceit. Even as the Israelites lusted for flesh in the wilderness and God gave them an abundance of quail and cursed them with a plague along with it, so he is doing to America. He has given us over to our arrogance, our lusts, our self-absorption, and our obstinate pride. We’ve clamored, cajoled and demanded our way like spoiled children. We’ve rebelled against God with a growing sense of entitlement and victimization when we don’t get our way.

We’ve persisted in our rebellion for so long that He has finally given us over to our selfish desires. He has allowed us to go our own way and we are now seeing where that leads. He has given us ridiculous leaders, inept politicians and social activists who say that evil is good. The majority endorses a worthless, “culturally correct” agenda that mocks God. We have become a worldly, self-absorbed society which openly mocks God with a manmade mock-up of Church life which has largely been seduced by the love of this world, worth less hype and self-indulgent theology rather than being convicted by a righteous God. The overwhelming majority of Americans have sold their souls for a pot of beans.

And yet, in the midst of all of this God is still calling out a faithful remnant whose kingdom is not of this world.
